We need to talk about Jerry Banfield

Ya know, sometimes I forget this page is called The Internet Ruined Everything. Typically I treat this place as a dumping ground for my personal thoughts, stories, anecdotes etc. Initially I conceived of it as a place to write about Internet culture and the decline of western civilization or whatever. Then I learned that humanity is in a constant state of flux between rising and falling. What we’re experiencing today is just the latest chapter of that. So fuck it, I figured. Instead of critiquing the madness, I’ll embrace it.

But sometimes I see something that challenges that perspective. Through the millions of hours I’ve logged watching YouTube, I’ll come across someone and think did the internet actually ruin everything? Do you know what I’m saying? It’s like certain people couldn’t have been possible without social media. Mind you, the internet is a tool. Some have used it for good. Others have used it for evil and avarice. And then there’s this third category of person that will wittingly or unwittingly debase themselves for a few clicks.

This person is called a “lolcow”.

Enough digital ink has been spilled over this “lolcow” phenomenon. I won’t spend much time describing it. But whenever I come across one, they always send me into a philosophical and existential tailspin. Have these people always existed? Or has the internet enabled them to become the worst version of themselves? There’s always been those who lacked self-awareness. The internet didn’t invent that. But before the days the World Wide Web, did we simply ignore these people? Moreover, before having the ability to create your own reality through ChatGPT and social media, were people so humbled by real life experience that they kept their worst tendencies in check?

There’s too many questions and not enough answers.

In my estimation, most lolcows are harmless. That doesn’t mean that their personal life isn’t a complete wreck. But most of them don’t pose a threat to society at large. Common internet etiquette is to not “troll” them or interfere with their personal lives. In other words, watching them is like going to the zoo (or the strip club depending on what kind of weirdo you are). You can look but don’t touch. This is the internet Prime Directive and if it is to be violated there must be a damn good reason.

And today, I believe I found reason. So I come before the internet counsel of elders to make my case.

Which brings me to St. Petersburg, Florida. I would personally never be caught dead there. But as of 2025, it is estimated that 264,000 people call it home. Like much of Florida, I presume that St. Pete’s is just a swamp filled with alligators and dead bodies. But the people living there have little clue about the ticking time bomb in their midst.

I’m not talking about a massive meth lab explosion.

I’m talking about Jerry Banfield.

When I try to wrap my mind around the immensity of Jerry Banfield, words often fail me. There’s no good way to explain him. But I’ll give it my best shot: He’s 42 years old. At one point in time, he was a cop and a raging alcoholic. He claims to have been making money on YouTube as far back as 2011. But somewhere along the way, he got married, had two kids, got a divorce, and scrubbed his online presence. Within the last few months, however, he has been blitzing the internet with new videos and “products” in an attempt to rebuild his brand.

Nothing out of the ordinary, right?

The problem is that the products and services he offers are things like dating, financial, and crypto advice. Grifters are a dime a dozen after all. No big deal right? A grifter is gonna grift. However, Banfield is open about being $200,000 in debt and living well outside of his means in addition to crashing and burning with every woman he meets. It’s an unusual selling tactic to say the least.

But perhaps the best person to explain Jerry Banfield is Jerry Banfield himself:

This is one of his latest. He just got kicked out of his yoga studio for making people uncomfortable. Mind you, his explanation starts off reasonable: it was his trolls and haters reporting him. If he had stopped there, he probably would have been fine. In fact, he might’ve garnered a degree of sympathy. Yet he couldn’t keep his mouth shut. As he digs his grave, he explains he might have been a little inappropriate with instructors and students. But the problem doesn’t lie with him. It’s everyone else’s fault for not being as open as he is. His solution is that he needs to be around “his people”. Honestly, I’m kinda baffled as to why anyone would post something like this. Was he doing damage control before word got to all the ladies around St. Pete? It’s too late for that, Jerry.

But all of his videos are like this. Each one crazier than the next. Here’s another one from a few days ago (which, I think, was featured on Who Are These Podcasts):

My normal reaction to something like this would be to find cracks in the facade. I mean, this has to be faked, right? Unfortunately Jerry is a textbook example of bipolar disorder. And for anyone who has spent any amount of time around men with bipolar, you immediately recognize the symptoms: talking too much, an overwhelming sense of confidence, short tempered, highly energetic, etc etc. If untreated or unmedicated, they take a heavy emotional toll on you and everyone within their vicinity.

Perhaps I sound a little “neurophobic”. I don’t mean to suggest that Jerry is a public menace because he has bipolar disorder alone. The problem is he keeps putting himself into powder keg situations: bad dates, six figure debts, getting confrontational in AA meetings, and finding himself (presumably) increasingly isolated. While he may not drink anymore, he has the mentality of a gambling addict. He acts as though any day now he will be a millionaire and that the mountains of high interest loans he’s taken out will have proven themselves worthwhile.

And this is to say nothing about his interactions with women.

If I have one good thing to say about Jerry is that at least I don’t get pedo vibes from him. I could be wrong, but I doubt we’ll find him on Chris Hansen anytime soon. But I do find his obsession with dating, particularly as a 42 year old man buried in debt, a little concerning. On the surface, I suppose Jerry comes across as somewhat put together. I don’t how long he is able to maintain that facade, but it can’t last forever. The real Jerry eventually comes out. He doesn’t have a lowkey presence online either. Women should, and often do, ghost him and flake out. How long can a man like Jerry take that before he starts dipping his toes into things like date rape drugs? He has also mentioned that he’d like to go to Thailand and get a wife. Even if this endeavor is successful, he’d probably bring a 20-something woman back to the States, impregnate her and maybe marry her, and then immediately lose interest and abandon her because Jerry is more interested in the chase than the commitment.

In sum, this is a tragic story waiting to happen.

Jerry Banfield, the man and the concept of the man, is a result of the times. He could have only been enabled by modern conventions and technology. For him, this is Jerry’s world and we’re just living in it. Challenge him, I dare you, at your own peril. Under better conditions, could he be a functional member of society? I’m sure. Which is what makes this story all the more saddening.

But I’m afraid that we’ve passed the event horizon. While I implore the counsel of internet elders to intervene wherever possible, I have no solution. No recommendation. I’m afraid we are powerless until we see Jerry Banfield’s mugshot from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department. Then the women of St. Pete’s, Florida will rest easy. And the internet can move on to the next lolcow.

I just hope that the attention he has received from Who Are These Pocasts and others (including myself) will not further enable him. 😬

“Layer Cake”: Britain’s finest hour

Before his James Bond got blown to shit on some rooftop on a Japanese island in No Time To Die (sPoIlEr AlErT!), Daniel Craig was in what is perhaps the greatest British film ever made: Layer Cake.

While every actor (except Tom Hardy) acts their ass off and every line of dialogue is an absolute banger, the film is perhaps best known as a turning point in film history: introducing the world to Daniel Craig’s god-like body.

Daniel Craig was blessed with being able to make whatever he’s wearing look like it was tailored specifically for him. He spends much of the film wearing the same plain gray raglan t-shirt with Levi’s…an outfit that probably costs $50 total, but it looks like he’s modeling Brioni.

I couldn’t pull off that look. I tried.

Another thing Craig succeeds at is showing his “sex” gaze:

Sorry, this is the best screenshot I could find.

Not to toot my own horn, but I’m happily married now because I mastered that gaze. Now personally, I like to use the Sean Connery method of tilting my head forward, arching an eyebrow, and smiling with my eyes. But every man has to master the “sex” gaze, to knock em dead with one look, if they want to be successful with the ladies (or the fellas).

That haircut is pretty good too. It’s definitely a 60’s style throwback, echoing the aforementioned Sean Connery and his toupee during his James Bond tenure. Unfortunately I’m a balding man, have been since I was 13, so I was never able to pull off that style. But because I’m balding, I’m sort of an expert at spotting hair plugs. And Craig, in my humble opinion, probably has hair plugs. That being said, I’d pay good money to find out who his specialist is.

Another thing on Craig’s style is that pimpin purplish/maroon jacket he wears to start the film:

I’m just gonna go ahead and say it: no man has ever looked as good on film as Daniel Craig did in Layer Cake.

“We get it, you’re in love with Daniel Craig. But what about the film?”

Oh yeah, the film’s good too.

not gonna lie, being in a relationship is great

Sucks for all you single people out there. You should really get in a relationship.

I read a lot of blogs from single folks. I get it, dating sucks. Not that YOU suck, it’s just the whole rigamarole.

I haven’t been single in 10 years. Love my family. Best thing that ever happened to me. Couldn’t recommend it enough.

But I’ve been there. I’ve hopped from one dating site to another, scrolling through countless boring profiles. It’s easy to get resentful, I would know. Outside of relationships, I’m the most resentful person you’ll ever meet. So I’ve seen that side.

I’m average looking, got a small pp, have no money, and I’m a dumbass. So if I can do it, so can you!

Here’s my advice: stop overthinking it.

You either feel it or you don’t. If you keep getting rejected, sorry bud…I’m sure you’ve heard it before, YOU’RE the common denominator. Accept the challenge. We’ve all had to spend our time in the wilderness. Your issues probably stem from problems that are hindering your romantic capabilities. You should probably address those. Just sayin’.

A lot of people want to discuss the differences between men and women, but I’ve learned something: other than our physical differences, men and women are exactly the same, at least in terms of needs and wants. No one likes to hear that because projecting their insecurities on the opposite sex justifies their resentment. But it’s true. Sorry.

If you’re looking for a fuck, that’s easy.

But if you’re looking for love, you got it all wrong. If you have a perfect image of “Eros” that no one can live up to, you don’t deserve love.

Love is built on respect, concern, a desire for another’s wellbeing. It requires you to get out of your own head. To many of you single folks haven’t learned how to check your own selfishness. If you’re only concerned on what your “lover” can give you, you don’t deserve love and I hope you remain single forever.

Good luck! 😀

100 Girls: was that—a movie?

Kids forget, but there was a time before 9/11.

No one’s proud of it. But it happened.

Evidence for such a decade is the 2000 film 100 Girls. It’s hard to believe they used to make movies like that.

The plot’s pretty simple: some dude in college loses his virginity in an elevator like it’s some big deal. Then he spends the rest of the movie looking for this mystery girl in a dormitory.

His roommate also has a fucked up penis.

If this was a typical boner comedy, it probably would have been standard background noise.

You see, discussions on the differences between men and women used to be “interesting” to people. Not to me though. I thought girls were just boys with vaginas and left it at that. I would know because I’ve definitely seen a vagina. But 20 years ago, people didn’t know that.

So there were things like The Man Show, Kevin Smith films, American Pie, etc. The difference is though, occasionally those things would be funny.

100 Girls attempts to elevate the formula. And the moral of the story is this:

“Girls have boobs. But did you they also have personality? What a revelation!”

*Cue Bowling For Soup.

So be thankful that you live in a time of terrorism, pandemics, catastrophic climate change, massive wealth inequality, and dying democracies.

At least it isn’t the 90’s.

why do u guys let me do this?

“Nice balls,” she said.

“Thanks”

I just got a new pair of truck nuts for my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500. Luciana Ortega De Navarro was impressed.

Luciana was the heiress to the largest cigarette manufacturer in Southern Cal. It recently went out of business. She asked me out on a date while I was sleeping in the doorway of her storefront in Venice.

She had a thing for hard luck cases.

So I finally brushed my teeth and ran a comb through my hair. I put on my best Def Leppard shirt and met her at Il Porcellino, the finest Italian place near Marina Del Ray.

Luciana wore a floral red dress. Her dark hair flowed down to her shoulders and her skin was as radiant as the Mediterranean sunset. She was stunning.

We shared a bottle of Molinara from Veneto over candlelight. She asked, “do you go to church?”

“I’ve been there before.”

“How do you feel about 3rd Baptist Church of Culver City?”

“I’ll give it a shot,” I said.

That Sunday, I wore a clip-on tie and went to church. Elderly people abound. They all asked “Welcome Brother James, isn’t Luciana great?!”

“I guess,” I said.

Services began. The choir sang “Are You Washed in the Blood”. The pastor waddled out from behind the stage.

The preacher was a heavyset man, obscenely flabby. He wore a flannel suit and lightly tinted bifocals. He asked us to take out our Bibles.

“Open to Romans 3:48.”

The parishioners complied.

“Now, my congregation, I wish to speak on god’s grace, his mercy, and his message to all the people of earth.”

Silence fell over the church.

“Yesterday, while I was praying, a voice said to me ‘I will bring forth your people as testimony to this cursed world.’ I replied ‘God! What does this mean?’ The voice said ‘do not worry, just listen to my commands,’”preacher continued.

All eyes were now glued to him.

“The voice said ‘Get up!’ So I got up. Then it said ‘take off your shirt!’ So I took off my shirt. Then it told me ‘take off your pants’. So I took off my pants. ‘Now drink your own piss!’ So I drank my own piss.”

The preacher began to move around the stage.

“It was at this time when I felt the grace of Jesus Christ inside of me. I leapt for joy! And I knew right then what I had to do.”

He then walked over to the assistant pastor.

“Brother Ted, please stand up.”

He stood up.

“Ladies and gentleman of this congregation. This is the future I want to bring forth.”

The preacher then pulled down Brother Ted pants, exposing his fully erect penis.

Gasps filled the audience.

As the parishioners started getting riled up, the preacher continued.

“Do not be afraid,” he said as he held Brother Ted’s member. “Change is always scary. But this is the beginning of a new era!”

The preacher then shoved Brother Ted’s penis into his ass. The sound of clapping ass cheeks echoed throughout the church.

Women in the aisles were passing out. The men shouted “Amen!”

“Come here Brother Al,” the preacher said to another assistant.

And the preacher sucked and fucked his way through the sermon, igniting his congregation into a titillated frenzy.

As we were driving home, Luciana asked, “what did you think about the service?”

“I don’t know,” I replied. “It was a little tame. Think I’ll just stay a Catholic.”

Remembering ‘Friday Night Lights’

Went on a date for the first time since 2003. With a woman. When she came to my house and noticed the pictures on the wall, a collage of all the important people in my life, she asked “is this your father?”

I said “No, that’s Coach Eric Taylor, molder of men. The greatest coach of high school football in Texas history.”

Puzzled, she then asked “umm, is this your brother?”

I replied “No, that’s Matt Saracen, the quarterback for the Dillon Panthers during their championship run. He was thrusted into action after Jason Street suffered a life altering injury. He wasn’t the most talented quarterback, but he had a lot of heart. Are you fucking stupid?”

Friday Night Lights is the greatest television show of all time. Probably always will be.

I have a lot of regrets. I spend a lot of time thinking about them. And it’s very hard to capture that feeling of reflection…of nostalgia…when you reflect on events in one’s life. Movies and TV definitely have a hard time capturing that that sensation.

This is where FNL excels. Watching it is like reaching back into one’s past. Complimented by its dreamy soundtrack, the cinematography is an achievement in its own right.

Honestly, the cinematography, music, and actors bail out what is occasionally terrible writing. I mean, one season is about how a character murders somebody…and amazingly gets away with it. It’s a misstep that any other television show could never recover from. But FNL did.

Also, after spending three emotionally charged seasons with an outstanding set of characters, we get introduced to a different set of characters that take over the storylines. Few shows can pull that off.

It’s brilliant.

It also changed my life. I couldn’t watch the series finale because I was crying too much because I was REALLY fucking high.

“But James, I don’t like American football.”

That’s horseshit and you know it.

As Coach Taylor says: “Everyone loves football, they just don’t know it yet.”
